WESTMINSTER, Md. – The McDaniel College Women's Basketball Team (1-0) opened the 2012-13 season with a 95-75 victory over Emory & Henry College (0-1) at the McDaniel Tip-Off Tournament. Emory & Henry will face Delaware Valley College on Saturday afternoon in the tournament's consolation game.
The Green Terror got out to a 6-2 lead 1:46 into the contest but the Wasps scored four-straight points in the paint to tie the contest at six. McDaniel then went on a 12-2 run to open up a 10-point lead at the 13:03 mark.
McDaniel would lead by as much as 21 late in the first half thanks in part to an 8-1 scoring spurt but Emory & Henry was able to cut the deficit to 19 (51-32) at the half.
After the Wasps scored the first basket of the second period, the Green Terror went on a 9-0 run for its largest lead of the contest (60-34). Emory & Henry trimmed the lead to 18 thanks to a 10-2 scoring run that lasted 2:57.
McDaniel was able to push its lead back to 25 down the stretch but the Wasps outscored the Green Terror 14-9 over the final 4:43 of the contest.
Steph Perez led McDaniel offensively with a game-high 23 points as the Green Terror placed four players in double figures. Codi McMaster had 17 points while Rachel Rybak and Brittney Davis tallied 14 and 13 points, respectively. Emme Wingerd had a team-high eight rebounds while Allie Reader led all players with eight steals.
As a team, McDaniel shot 40.7 percent (33-of-81) from the field and took advantage of 42 trips to the charity stripe and 20 offensive rebounds.
Emory & Henry saw three of its players reach double digits in scoring led by sophomore guard Michelle Williams' (Stokesdale, N.C.) 17-point performance. Sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) tallied 15 points and five rebounds while sophomore guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) tallied 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals on the night. Freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) tallied nine points and 10 rebounds in her collegiate debut.
Emory & Henry went 26-for-57 (45.6%) from the field and hit 15-of-20 free throws in the contest. The Wasps led the battle of the boards 47-37, but were plagued by 40 turnovers.
