WINCHESTER, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team evened its record at 3-3 on the year and moved to 2-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a 67-58 victory over Shenandoah University (1-6, 0-2 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at Shingleton Gymnasium.
It is the first time since January 22 and 25, 2011 that the Wasps have put together back-to-back victories. E&H led for all but 1:54 of the contest and were ahead by double digits for more than 25 minutes of play.
With the score tied 2-2 at the 18:29 mark, Emory & Henry went on a 17-4 run, culminated by back-to-back three-pointers by freshman guard Tenesha Connor (Greensboro, N.C.) and sophomore guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) to make the score 19-6 with 10:07 remaining. After the Hornets cut the lead to nine (26-17), the Wasps went on a 10-2 run for a 17-point lead. The two squads would trade baskets over the final minute of the half to make the score 38-22 going into the intermission.
After the break, Shenandoah trimmed the margin back to nine (38-29) with seven-straight points, but Emory & Henry responded with a 9-0 run for a 47-29 advantage. The Wasps would increase their lead to 20 on back-to-back baskets by Williams with 11:17 left to play.
Later in the half, the Hornets began to climb back into the game. Down by 18, SU was able to trim the margin to eight (66-58), but were left with only 47 seconds on the clock after the run. Emory & Henry made a pair of free throws for the final 67-58 margin.
The Wasps shot 41.7 percent (25-for-60) for the game compared to just 28.6 percent (18-for-63) for the Hornets. Emory & Henry also held a 48-41 rebounding advantage and won the battle for points in the paint, 36-26.
Freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) led E&H in the victory as she posted her fifth-straight double-double. She had a career-high 24 points and added 13 rebounds and three steals. Williams finished the contest with 11 points and six rebounds as she made three three-pointers.
Sophomore guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) had seven points, eight rebounds and three assists while sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) pitched in nine points and five rebounds.
Shenandoah saw three players reach double-figures in scoring led by Holly Chittenden with 14 points and 17 rebounds to complete the double-double. Crystal Petrus had 14 points of her own while Sara D'Amico added 12 points despite the loss.
Emory & Henry will return home on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m., matchup with Southern Virginia University. The contest will be the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team.
