EMORY, Va. – The Bridgewater College Women's Basketball Team (4-5, 3-1 ODAC) opened the second half with a 29-3 run spanning 9:30 as it claimed a 65-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Emory & Henry College (5-7, 2-2 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at the John Rutledge King Center. The Wasps, who started the season 5-3, have dropped their last four contests.
The two squads battled back and forth over the opening 6:30 of the game as neither team led by more than two points. Bridgewater then went on a 7-0 run to take a 17-12 lead with 11:47 on the clock. The Wasps responded with six-straight points of their own to go up 18-17. E&H would lead by as much as six in the first half (29-23 with 2:04 remaining) and took a 31-28 advantage into the locker room.
Bridgewater opened the second half with a 29-3 run, thanks in part to 12 turnovers and 1-of-14 shooting by Emory & Henry, as the Eagles took a 57-34 lead. Though their backs were against the wall, the Wasps did not quit. Down 61-39 with 5:04 left to go in the game, E&H finished on a 16-4 run which closed the gap to 10 points for the 65-55 final margin.
The Eagles were led by Jessica Mullen's 26 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals while Katelynn Hottinger added 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Bridgewater shot just 32.4 percent (23-for-17) in the game but took advantage of 35 turnovers by Emory & Henry, though trailing in points off turnovers, 30-23.
Emory & Henry freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) had a team-high 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals off the bench. Sophomore guards Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) and Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) each had eight points while Langley added six boards, three assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) recorded seven points and six rebounds of her own.
The Wasps suffered from poor shooting as they hit just 30.6 percent (22-of-72) of their attempts from the floor and made just 7-of-14 free throws.
E&H will travel to Roanoke on Wednesday to face Hollins University. Tipoff in the ODAC contest is set for 7:00 p.m.
