BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Women's Basketball Team (9-8, 6-4 ODAC) built a 41-28 halftime lead en route to defeating Emory & Henry College (7-11, 4-6 ODAC) by a 78-56 score in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Nininger Hall Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles got out to a 13-3 lead at the 16:36 mark of the first half but the Wasps would fight their way back into the contest with a 10-4 run, cutting the margin to 17-13. Up by four with 8:40 on the clock, Bridgewater went on a 22-11 run pushing the lead to 41-26 with 19 seconds to go. A layup by E&H freshman guard Tenesha Connor (Greensboro, N.C.) made the halftime margin, 41-28.
In the second half, BC picked up where it left off with an 11-4 run to start the period. The Eagles would lead by as much as 26 (60-34) as the Wasps would get no closer than 21 for the rest of the game. Emory & Henry however, outscored Bridgewater, 22-18, over the last 13:34 of the contest.
The Eagles were led offensively by Jessica Mullen, who tallied 20 points in the contest while Katelynn Hottinger registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, adding four assists. Holly Morgan also had 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
For the game, Bridgewater shot 43.5 percent (27-for-72) for the contest and hit 20-of-27 (74.1%) of their free throw attempts. The Eagles also held a 40-36 rebounding advantage and forced 35 turnovers in the contest.
Emory & Henry sophomore guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) and freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) each had nine points while Connor, sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) and sophomore center Carlyta Hamm (Wytheville, Va.) pitched in seven points apiece.
As a team, the Wasps were 23-for-57 (40.4%) from the field and posted 17 steals and 11 assists. E&H had 30 points come from the bench and scored 30 points in the paint.
Emory & Henry will return home to the John Rutledge King Center on Wednesday evening for an ODAC showdown with Hollins University. The contest will be the nightcap of a doubleheader with the men's team and is set for an 8:00 p.m., tipoff.
