Eastern Mennonite Women’s Basketball Outshoots Emory & Henry, 83-51, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Eastern Mennonite University Women's Basketball Team (15-5, 11-1 ODAC) shot 50 percent (32-for-64) for the game en route to defeating Emory & Henry College (7-13, 4-8 ODAC) by a 83-51 score Saturday afternoon at the John Rutledge King Center.

The Royals got out to a 17-2 lead in the first 7:18 of the contest. Emory & Henry would then go on a 11-3 run to cut the margin to seven (20-13) with 8:37 to go before the break. Up by nine with 2:11 on the clock, EMU scored the final eight points of the half to take a 36-19 lead into the break.

Eastern Mennonite came out in the second half, hitting six of its first eight field goals to push its lead to 22 (51-29)  at the 13:56 mark. E&H was able to cut the margin to 20 but would get no closer. EMU used a 10-2 run to extend its advantage to 65-35 as it went on to win by the 83-51 score.

Shakeerah Sykes led the Royals with 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench while Steph Rheinheimer had 13 points and four boards. Kala Yoders and Kayley Argenbright each posted 11 points in the victory.

As a team, EMU scored 42 points in the paint and won the battle of points off turnovers, 30-15. The Royals were eight-for-12 from beyond the arc including a 77.8 percent (7-of-9) performance in the second half.

Emory & Henry was led by freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) with nine points, seven rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) scored nine points and added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Freshman forwards Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) and Amanda Stanley (Mooresville, N.C.) pulled down eight and six boards, respectively.

The Wasps shot just 29.5 percent (18-for-61) for the game and suffered from 21 turnovers.

E&H will travel to Lexington, Va. on Tuesday evening for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest with Washington and Lee University. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
