Washington and Lee Women’s Basketball Squeaks Past Emory & Henry, 55-52, Tuesday Evening

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Women's Basketball Team (8-12, 5-8 ODAC) was able to squeak out a 55-52 win over Emory & Henry College (7-14, 4-9 ODAC) Tuesday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at the Warner Center.

The two squads battled back and forth for the first 10 minutes of the game with the Generals taking a 15-11 lead. Emory & Henry scored the next nine points to open up a 20-15 advantage with 7:18 on the clock. W&L finished the half on a 10-5 run to knot the score at 25 points apiece at the break.

Washington and Lee came out in the second half on an 11-4 run for its largest lead of the contest (36-29). Down by six with 10 minutes to play, Emory & Henry went on an 11-2 run for a 45-42 advantage.

After the Generals went up 54-50 with 1:36 on the clock, Emory & Henry had several opportunities to tie or take the lead, but was not able to find the bottom of the bucket, as W&L went on to win, 55-52.

Washington and Lee was led by Rachel Warrick's 19-point performance while Katy Wilson had 12 points and six assists. Shelbi Hendricks notched 11 points and four rebounds off the bench for the Generals.

As a team, W&L shot 39.7 percent (23-for-58) from the field despite missing all six of their attempts from beyond the arc. The Generals' defense forced 20 turnovers and held a 22-14 advantage on points in the paint.

Emory & Henry sophomore guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) had 18 points and nine rebounds off the bench as she hit a game-high four three-pointers. Sophomore guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) had 12 points and six rebounds while freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) tallied 10 points and seven boards.

The Wasps went 20-for-55 (36.4%) from the floor and held a 38-34 rebounding advantage. E&H hit 8-of-11 (72.1%) of their free throw attempts and won the battled of the benches, 24-17.

Emory & Henry will return home on Saturday to face Lynchburg College in an ODAC showdown at 4:00 p.m. The contest will be a doubleheader with the E&H men and will also serve as the Wasps' annual Play4Kay "pink" game.
