Guilford Women’s Basketball Outlasts Emory & Henry, 56-42, Wednesday Evening

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College Women's Basketball Team (20-4, 13-2 ODAC) was able to ward off a strong challenge by Emory & Henry College (7-16, 4-11 ODAC) Wednesday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Ragan-Brown Field House.

Emory & Henry started off the game strong and used a 7-0 run midway through the first half to take a 14-8 lead over Guilford. The Quakers responded by scoring nine of the next 12 points to tie the contest at 17 points apiece with 6:04 left in the period. E&H would push its advantage back to four points (22-18), but GC finished the half on a 7-0 run, taking a 25-22 lead into the break.

Guilford came out of the break with an 11-3 run to push its lead to double digits (36-25) for the first time on the night at the 15:37 mark. The Quakers would extend the gap to 20 (55-35) down the stretch, but the Wasps finished the game on a 7-1 run for the 56-42 final score.

Brittany Atwater led Guilford with a double-double as she tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds. She added three steals and two assists, playing the entire 40 minutes of the game. Gabby Oglesby notched 12 points and nine boards while Morgan King had 11 points on the night.

The Quakers shot just 35.8 percent (19-for-53) from the floor but hit 17-of-24 (70.8%) of their free throw attempts. Guilford outscored Emory & Henry, 22-8, in the paint and held a 20-8 advantage on points off turnovers.

Emory & Henry was paced by sophomore guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) as she put up 13 points and hit four three-pointers. Junior guard JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) had nine points and four rebounds while freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) led all players with 16 rebounds.

For the game, the Wasps shot just 25.5 percent (13-for-51) from the floor and made just 4-of-23 (17.4%) of their shots in the second half. E&H made seven three-pointers and held a 13-9 advantage on second-chance points.

The Wasps will conclude the 2012-13 regular season on Saturday when they travel to Virginia Beach to face the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
