Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Falls In Exhibition To Radford Saturday

RADFORD, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team got their season off to a start with an exhibition game against Radford University (1-0) Saturday evening at the Dedmon Center. The Highlanders, who counted the contest as their first regular season game, won by a 74-38 score.

The Wasps scored the first basket of the game just 1:02 into the contest as sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) hit a jumper just outside the paint. E&H would keep the lead until the 17:10 mark when Radford's Rachel Ross converted the first field goal of the game for the Highlanders. RU went on a 10-0 run to break the game open and never looked back against non-scholarship Emory & Henry.

After Radford pushed the lead to 36-13 with 27 seconds remaining in the first half, E&H sophomore guard Anna Green (Raleigh, N.C.) scored with nine ticks left on the clock for the 36-15 halftime lead.

The Wasps hung with the Highlanders early in the second half, and scored four of the first nine points after the break forcing a Radford timeout. The larger, more physical RU team then went on an 11-0 run to push the margin to 33 (52-19 with 13:59 remaining).

For the final 12:33 of the game, Emory & Henry hung tight and was only outscored 21-17 over the final minutes of the game.

Green led the way for the Wasps with eight points and three rebounds while Farr had seven points, nine boards, and two steals. Eleven different players scored for Emory & Henry, but the team shot just 19.4 percent (13-for-67) from the field. E&H also pulled down 17 offensive rebounds in the contest.

Radford was paced by Ayana Avery as she posted a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Rachael Ross also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Kermisha Clark added 11 points and 10 assists.

Emory & Henry will have its first regular season game on Friday, November 22 when it travels to Raleigh, N.C. to take on William Peace University in the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament. Tipoff between the Wasps and Pacers is set for 8:00 p.m.
