RALEIGH, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (1-0) shot 62.1 (18-for-29) in the first half en route to a 66-56 win over William Peace University in the Pacers' Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament Friday evening. With the win, the Wasps advance to the tournament's title game on Saturday afternoon.
WPU got out to a 7-2 lead at the 17:26 mark of the first half, and led 20-12 with 10:56 on the clock. Emory & Henry scored the next eight points to tie things up thanks to six points by sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.). The Pacers regained the lead for a moment but the Wasps took control as they finished the half on a 9-4 run for the 37-33 score at intermission.
E&H started the second half with a 5-2 run to push the lead to 42-35 with 15:33 to go. The Pacers cut the deficit to three points (42-39) at the 13:47 mark but the Wasps slowly built a double-digit lead, going up by as much as 12 (64-52) on a three-point play by junior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) with 3:26 on the clock. WPU would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way as Emory & Henry picked up its first win of the year, 66-56.
Langley led all scorers with 18 points and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Farr went eight-for-13 from the field and ended the night with 17 points, five boards and three steals. Sophomore center Amanda Stanley (Mooresville, N.C.) notched 10 points, five rebounds and two steals while sophomore guard Courtney Puckett (Bassett, Va.) chipped in six points and four assists.
As a team, E&H shot 53.7 percent (29-for-54) for the game but hit just 38.1 percent (8-for-21) of its free throws. The Wasps took advantage of 44 points in the paint and 23 points off turnovers despite being out-rebounded, 44-30.
William Peace was led by Derrrica Jones' double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, adding five steals. Brittany Boykin and Ka'La Jordan each had 13 points in the contest. The Pacers shot just 18-for-60 (30.0%) for the game, but held a 17-4 advantage on second chance points, pulling down 21 offensive rebounds.
E&H will take on the Hartwick College Hawks at 3:00 p.m., on Saturday afternoon in the tournament's championship game. Hartwick (3-0) defeated Salem College, 51-46, Friday evening.
