EMORY, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College Women's Basketball Team (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) opened up a 39-15 halftime lead and held on to defeat Emory & Henry (1-2, 0-1 ODAC) by a 67-47 score Sunday afternoon at the John Rutledge King Center and Bob Johnson Court.
The Marlins scored the first nine points of the game and opened up a 15-3 lead at the 15:02 mark of the first half. E&H cut the margin with a 6-2 scoring spurt, but VWC went on another big run to lead 39-15 at the half. Emory & Henry shot just 19.0 percent (4-for-21) in the opening 20 minutes compared to 17-for-38 (44.7%) for Virginia Wesleyan.
Emory & Henry opened the second half strongly with junior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) scoring the first eight points for the Wasps. The Marlins responded to E&H's baskets, keeping their advantage above 20 points for the majority of the period. With VWC leading by 27 at the 7:21 mark (56-29), Emory & Henry put together a 15-6 run over the next 4:33 to get the deficit to 62-44. The two squads traded baskets for the final two minutes of the game, with Virginia Wesleyan pushing the 20-point (67-47) final margin.
The Wasps were 14-for-39 from the field (35.9%) in the second half and outscored the Marlins by a 32-28 clip in the closing period.
VWC put four players in double figures led by Andrea Paphites, who scored 15 points and added seven assists, four rebounds and four steals. Brittany Glasco had 15 points, six boards, and four assists while Katie Tassa notched 12 points and nine rebounds. Kelly Jones chipped in 10 points as well for the Marlins.
Langley paced the Wasps' offense with 13 points and added six rebounds while sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) was close behind with 11 points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) added six points and seven rebounds off the bench while freshman guard Asja Jenkins (Richmond, Va.) added five points.
Emory & Henry will travel to Fayetteville, N.C. on Tuesday evening for a non-conference contest with Methodist University. Tipoff between the Wasps and Monarchs is set for 7:30 p.m.
