Bluefield Women’s Basketball Downs Emory & Henry, 72-40, Thursday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (1-7) suffered a 72-40 setback to visiting Bluefield College (5-4) Thursday evening at the John Rutledge King Center. The Lady Rams shot 51.7 percent (30-for-58) for the game en route to the victory.

Bluefield got out to a 23-3 lead at the 9:35 mark of the first half. The Wasps stepped up and matched their larger and stronger opponent for the rest of the half, outscoring them 20-18 in the final nine minutes for a 41-23 halftime score.

After the break, E&H scored five of the first seven points to cut the deficit to 15 (43-28). Seven straight points by Bluefield pushed the gap back over 20. The Wasps would get within 18 with 11:07 on the clock but could not trim the lead any more as the Lady Rams steadily increased their advantage to the 72-40 final margin.

Bluefield was paced by Jade McDaniel, who scored 18 points on five-for-nine shooting off the bench Asia Wheeler notched 11 points 12 rebounds and three steals for the double-double while Janee Simmons had 12 points and six rebounds. Monique Robinson also reached double figures in scoring, putting up 10 points and pulling down four boards. Teqa McNeal had four points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) led the way for Emory & Henry as she notched 11 points and eight rebounds, going five-for-seven from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Anna Green (Raleigh, N.C.) had nine points, connecting on a pair of three-pointers while sophomore center Amanda Stanley (Mooresville, N.C.) had six points off the bench. Freshman guard Asja Jenkins (Richmond, Va.) dished-out a game-high six assists, helping out on each of the Wasps first five baskets while junior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) had seven rebounds.

The Lady Rams held a 38-16 advantage on points in the paint and out-rebounded the Wasps by a 48-33 margin. E&H shot just 12-for-55 (21.8%) from the field for the game.

Emory & Henry will have six days off for exams and will next take the court in the Cruzin Classic at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Wasps will face the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday, December 19 at 2:00 p.m.
