Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Defeats Mount Saint Vincent, 74-69, Thursday In The Cruzin Classic

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (2-7) got back on the winning track as it defeated the College of Mount Saint Vincent (5-2) by a 74-69 score at the Cruzin Classic on the campus of Nova Southeastern University. The win snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Wasps.

The two teams battled back and forth through the opening minutes of the game as the Wasps took a 14-6 lead at the 13:28 mark of the first half. Mount Saint Vincent went on a 14-6 run of their own to tie things at 20 and the Dolphins pushed their advantage to as much as five (33-27) prior to the break. E&H finished the half on a 6-2 run to close the gap to 35-33 at the break.

Mount Saint Vincent ran its lead to six to start the second half but Emory & Henry put up 10 straight points to lead 49-45 with 12:06 on the clock. Down by the same four-point margin moments later, the Dolphins went on a 14-2 run for a 63-55 lead, their largest advantage of the contest. After calling a timeout, E&H outscored CMSV, 19-6, over the final 6:17 of the game. The Wasps erased the deficit and put some distance in the margin in the final 20 seconds of the game as they went on to win 74-69.

Emory & Henry was led by junior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) with 23 points, 13 rebounds and four assists as she scored 15 in the first half. Senior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) also had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds and added a game-high five steals. Sophomore forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) notched 10 points and six boards off the bench while freshman guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) added five bounds three rebounds, six assists and two steals.

As a team, E&H shot 36.7 percent (22-for-60) from the field and converted 29-of-43 (67.4%) of its free throws. The Wasps held a 54-35 advantage on rebounds, pulling down 21 on the offensive glass. Emory & Henry also led 18-4 on second-chance points and 27-17 on bench scoring.

Mount Saint Vincent was paced by Kelly Fraser's double-double as she had 15 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Christina Barone and Theresa Carey had 13 points each with Barone added six assists. Brooke West notched nine points and six boards off the bench for the Dolphins. CMSV shot 38.7 percent (24-for-62) from the floor and hit seven three-pointers but the free throw disparity gave E&H a solid advantage at the line.

Emory & Henry will play its final game in the Cruzin Classic on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. The Wasps will take on the Lions of The College of New Jersey and will then board their cruise ship to The Bahamas.
