EMORY, Va. – The Salem College Women's Basketball Team (8-3) picked up a 59-49 win over Emory & Henry College Tuesday evening at the John Rutledge King Center. The Spirits closed the game on a 10-4 run en route to the victory.
Salem got out to a 10-0 advantage at the 12:17 mark of the first half and led by as much as 12 (15-3 with 10:15 on the clock). Down 21-9, Emory & Henry finished the final 6:47 of the half on a 16-3 run for a 27-24 lead at the half.
The Wasps continued their run in the early moments of the second half, going up 37-30, after outscoring the Spirits 10-6 to start things off. Salem then went on a 9-0 run to take the lead, 39-37, but E&H hit a layup to tie the score at 39. Five straight points by the Spirits gave them a lead they would not relinquish as they went on to win, 59-49.
Salem's Satavia Taylor had 24 points to lead all scorers and added seven rebounds and five assists. Jasmine Shabazz added 11 points and nine boards while Quantashea Lewis chipped in eight points, five rebounds and three steals off the bench.
The Spirits shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) in the game and held a slim 45-42 rebounding advantage. They were spurred on to victory by shooting 12-for-24 (50%) in the second half.
Emory & Henry sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) paced the homestanding Wasps with 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Tenesha Connor (Greensboro, N.C.) had eight points off the bench while senior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) tallied four points, seven rebounds and five steals.
The Wasps were just 16-for-57 (28.1%) from the field and hit only one of nine three-point attempts. E&H forced Salem into 26 turnovers, but committed 27 of their own.
Emory & Henry will remain at home on Saturday when it returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a 4:00 p.m., contest against Washington and Lee University.
