EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (4-14, 2-7 ODAC) saw four of its players reach double figures in scoring as it defeated visiting Hollins University (5-13, 0-9 ODAC) by a 71-63 score in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Wednesday evening.
The two teams swapped baskets for the first 11:30 of the game with E&H holding a 15-13 lead. Hollins then went on a 13-0 run that covered 2:48 for a 26-15 advantage. After trading three-point baskets, the Wasps closed the half on a 14-0 run for a 32-29 margin at the intermission.
Hollins scored six straight to start the second half and took a 35-32 lead, its largest of the final 20 minutes. Emory & Henry went back up with 16:45 on the clock and would never trail again. Up by two (41-39), the Wasps reeled off nine straight points as part of a 16-5 run that put them up by a game-high 13 points with 7:37 to go. The Green-and-Gold trimmed the deficit to six points with less than four minutes remaining but E&H responded and held on for the 71-63 league victory.
Sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) posted a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead Emory & Henry while sophomore guard Anna Green (Raleigh, N.C.) was close behind with 13 points on three-for-five shooting from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) had 12 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals while junior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) notched 11 points and three boards.
E&H Sophomore guard Tenesha Connor (Greensboro, N.C.) and sophomore center Amanda Stanley (Mooresville, N.C.) each added nine points with Stanley pulling down nine rebounds to nearly have a double-double of her own. As a team, the Wasps shot 42.0 percent (29-for-69) for the game and hit six-of 12 (50%) of their three-point attempts. Emory & Henry struggled from the free throw line (7-for-23) but held an 18-0 advantage on fast break points and scored 19 points off of turnovers.
Hollins was paced by Jewell Parfitt, who had 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Ella Oakley tallied 13 points, five rebounds, four blocks and two assists while Racheal Crowder and Carrie Cox put up nine and eight points, respectively. HU shot 37.5 percent (24-for-64) from the field but fell victim to 25 turnovers despite outscoring E&H, 16-7 on second-chance points and holding a 46-44 rebounding advantage.
Emory & Henry will remain at home on Saturday when it hosts Eastern Mennonite University at 4:30 p.m. The contest will be the second of a doubleheader with the men's team, which is set to play at 2:00 p.m.
