EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (5-16, 3-9 ODAC) scored 22 points off of Shenandoah University's (8-13, 5-7 ODAC) turnovers en route to a 68-62 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference Play Saturday afternoon at home. The contest also served as the Wasps' annual Play4Kay game.
After falling behind, 5-2, in the opening minute and a half of the game, the Wasps reeled off a 17-3 run to take a 19-8 lead at the 10:47 mark. Shenandoah was able to cut the margin to nine on three separate occasions but Emory & Henry pushed its advantage to as much as 14, leading 38-26 at the half. Sophomore guard Courtney Puckett (Bassett, Va.) notched 12 points in the first half on five-of-eight shooting to lead the E&H charge.
The two squads battled back and forth early on in the second half, but a 5-0 run by Emory & Henry gave them their largest lead of the game, 53-35, with 11:57 on the clock. Shenandoah scored the next 12 points to cut the margin to 53-47. The Wasps responded to the Hornets' run, and when SU got within four with under two minutes to play, E&H put the game out of reach, scoring five straight. A late three-pointer by Shenandoah gave the game its final 68-62 score.
Emory & Henry saw four players reach double figures in scoring, led by Puckett, who finished the game with 14 points. Freshman guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) tallied her first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 assists, adding five rebounds and five assists. Senior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) had 11 points and nine rebounds while sophomore center Amanda Stanley (Mooresville, N.C.) registered 11 points and two boards. Sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) chipped in eight points and eight rebounds as well for the Wasps.
As a team, E&H shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field and hit 18-of-25 (72%) of its free throw attempts. The Wasps held a 22-9 advantage on points off turnovers and won the battle down low, 32-24.
Shenandoah's Crystal Petrus led all players with 22 points and added six rebounds while Holly Chittenden had 12 points and eight boards. Erin French scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds. The Hornets shot just 33.3 percent (19-for-57) in the game but were effective at the free throw line, converting 20-of-25 (80%) attempts. SU out-rebounded E&H, 41-38, including a 14-11 margin on the offensive glass.
Emory & Henry will travel to Greensboro, N.C. next Wednesday evening for a 7:00 p.m., ODAC contest with Guilford College.
