ROANOKE, Va. – The Hollins University Women's Basketball Team (7-17, 2-13 ODAC) built a fifteen-point second-half lead and held on to beat Emory & Henry College (6-18, 4-11 ODAC) by a 71-66 score in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.
HU got out to a 6-0 lead in the opening moments of the first half and responded to each of E&H's runs to take the lead. Up just 27-25 with 5:51 before halftime, Hollins went on a 14-1 run for a 41-26 lead. The Wasps would score the final four points of the period for a 41-30 margin at the break.
A pair of quick buckets by the green-and-gold out of the intermission reestablished the 15-point lead, but Emory & Henry began to mount a comeback. E&H matched HU nearly two-for-one on the scoreboard for much of the second half, tying the game at 66 with 32 seconds left on the clock.
Hollins hit a big three-pointer with 14 seconds to go but the Wasps' attempt at a rebuttal was no good as the green-and-gold claimed the 71-66 win.
Brandi Chesne led all players with 18 points and added five rebounds while Jewel Parfitt notched 15 points including the three-pointer that made the difference. Parfitt also had four rebounds, three assists and three blocks while Taylor Catron notched 12 points, three rebounds and four assists.
As a team, Hollins was 47.2 percent (25-for-53) from the field and connected on seven three's. It held a 42-36 rebounding advantage and was able to overcome 25 turnovers in the contest.
Emory & Henry was paced by sophomore guard Tenesha Connor's (Greensboro, N.C.) 15 points, six rebounds and four steals while freshman guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) added seven points, six assists, five steals and four rebounds. Junior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) had nine points while sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) pulled down a team-high nine boards. Senior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) registered seven points and five rebounds.
The Wasps only shot 29.2 percent (19-for-65) from the field including a 3-for-24 (12.5%) outing from beyond the arc. E&H won the battle on points off turnovers, 31-12, and hit 25-of-31 (80.6%) of its free throw attempts, but could not get past the deficit.
Emory & Henry will travel to Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon for its final regular season game of the year. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
