Greensboro Women’s Basketball Rallies To Defeat Emory & Henry, 79-67, In Jean Edge Classic

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Greensboro College Women's Basketball Team (1-0) used a 14-2 second half run to propel itself to a come-from-behind 79-67 win over Emory & Henry College (0-1) Saturday in the Jean Edge Classic on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College.

The contest was the Wasps' first for Head Coach Anne Crutchfield, a 1989 graduate of the College, who took over the reins of the program in April.

Emory & Henry got out to a 10-2 lead at the 16:35 mark of the first half thanks in part to a pair of jumpers by junior forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.). The Pride trimmed the margin to 14-13 but the Wasps held onto the lead, going into the locker room with a 34-29 advantage.

Early in the second half, E&H continued to keep Greensboro at bay, going up 43-35 on two free throws by sophomore guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.). The Pride then went on a 14-2 run which covered 4:08 to take a 49-45 lead with 10 minutes to play. Six straight points by Greensboro later in the half made for a 63-56 advantage as the Pride led by as much as 14 on their way to a 76-96 win.

Greensboro was led by Shanita Hampton, who tallied a game-high 19 points and while Syerra Troutman earned a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Azha McNeil chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals. The Pride shot 48.3 percent (29-for-60) for the game and scored 42 points in the paint en route to the win.

Emory & Henry junior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while Brewster had 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Jacoby had 10 points, six steals, three rebounds and three assists. The Wasps shot just 35.5 percent (22-for-62) for the game and hit only 4-of-20 three-point attempts.

E&H will conclude play in the Jean Edge Classic on Sunday afternoon when it takes on the host North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
