Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Tops Salem, 69-59, Tuesday On The Road

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (3-5) got back on track with a 69-59 win over Salem College (1-4) Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

The Wasps got to a 16-2 lead as six different players scored in the opening 10 minutes of the game. E&H continued its strong defensive effort, leading 30-13 at the half. Salem only managed a six-for-36 (16.7%) shooting effort in the opening 20 minutes of the game and committed 12 turnovers.

In the opening 4:30 of the second half, the Spirits turned the tables on the Wasps, starting things off on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 34-23. Emory & Henry answered back to up by 15 on a pair of free throws by junior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) but an 8-0 run by Salem later in the half got the score to within seven points at 42-35.

After E&H pushed its advantage back to double digits the Spirits put up another 8-0 run with six points coming from Quantashea Lewis to draw the score to its closest point since early in the first half, 52-47. Salem would get within five points twice more in the closing moments of the game but Emory & Henry closed things out on a 6-1 run to claim the 69-59.

 The Wasps were paced by junior forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.), who notched career-highs in both points and rebounds as she had 17 points and nine boards in the game. Farr went for a double-double, tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) had 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Freshman guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va.) chipped in 11 points, going seven-for-nine from the free throw line as well for Emory & Henry.

As a team, E&H shot just 34.4 percent (21-for-61) from the field but hit 25-of-33 (75.8%) of its free throw attempts and held a 43-35 rebounding advantage.

Salem was paced by Lewis' game-high 26 points on 11-for-18 shooting, 20 of which were scored in the second half. Alexihonna Bush had 12 points while Sabrina Shepherd added nine points. Kristal Lollis pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. The Spirits recovered from their ice cold shooting in the first half to go 52.9 percent (18-for-34) from the field in the second half.

Emory & Henry will have nearly three weeks between games as the Wasps will focus on final exams and the Christmas Holiday. E&H will next take the court on Monday, December 29 when hosts Centenary (N.J.) College in day one of the Comfort Inn Holiday Tournament at the John Rutledge King Center. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
