Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Defeats Centenary, 74-65, In Comfort Inn Holiday Tournament Monday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (4-5) shot 51.9 percent (14-for-27) from the field in the second half en route to a comeback 74-65 win over Centenary (N.J.) College (2-7) Monday evening in the Comfort Inn Holiday Tournament.

With the win, the Wasps advance to the tournament championship game at 4:00 p.m., to face the Crusaders of Alvernia University, which defeated Meredith College, 69-62, in the opening contest of the tournament. Meredith will take on Centenary in the consolation game at 2:00 p.m.

Emory & Henry got out to a 7-2 lead at the 16:29 mark of the first half but Centenary scored 12 straight points to take a 14-7 lead with 11:56 on the clock. The Wasps battled back, closing the gap to two points on a pair of occasions, but the Cyclones held off the runs and took a 37-32 lead into the intermission.

The two teams traded baskets in the early parts of the second half before E&H went on a 6-1 run to tie things up at 51 points apiece. The next four and a half minutes featured six ties and four lead changes before Emory & Henry scored the final 10 points of the contest to win by a 74-65 score.

E&H saw four of its players reach double figures in scoring led by freshman guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va.), who went seven-for-seven from the field, for 17 points. Junior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) had 15 points and six rebounds while senior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) and sophomore guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) added 11 points each. Jacoby added game-highs in assists and steals with eight and six, respectively.

As a team, the Wasps shot 40.3 percent (25-for-67) for the game, hitting four three-pointers in the first half. Emory & Henry went 20-for-27 (74.1%) at the free throw line, and scored 29 points off of 30 Centenary turnovers.

Centenary's Mallory George had a led all players with 19 points, and chipped in eight rebounds while Rachel Edwards had 17 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers. Nicole Carataino added 10 points off the bench and pulled down six boards. The Cyclones shot 43.4 percent (23-for-53) and led the rebounding battle, 44-32, for the game but 30 turnovers were their undoing.
