Lynchburg Women’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 76-63, Tuesday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Lynchburg College Women's Basketball Team (12-6, 7-2 ODAC) earned a 76-63 win over Emory & Henry College (8-10, 3-6 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Tuesday evening at the John Rutledge King Center. Prior to the start of the game, E&H head coach Anne Crutchfield presented a ball to senior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.), who reached the 1,000-point mark in Saturday's road contest at Randolph-Macon College.

The two squads traded baskets for the opening five minutes of the game before Lynchburg went on a 17-4 run to take a 24-11 lead at the 11:18 mark. Emory & Henry stormed back into the game, closing the margin to one point at 33-32 with a 19-7 scoring spurt which ate up just over four minutes of clock. The Hornets took a 42-36 lead into the break, scoring four of the last six points of the opening 20 minutes.

Midway through the second half, LC extended its lead back to double digits, thanks in part to eight-straight points over a period of 1:50. The Wasps pushed back, getting to within six (58-52) with 9:15 left to play, but the Hornets responded to claim the 13-point victory, 76-63. Emory & Henry shot only 27 percent (10-for-37) in the second half compared to a 13-for-30 (43.3%) effort by Lynchburg.

The Hornets were paced by Shannon Allan's game-high 27 points on 10-for-14 shooting including five-for-seven from beyond the arc. Allan added four rebounds, three assists and four steals. Charmaine Hairston had 16 points and five assists while Sammi Goldsmith chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists. As a team, Lynchburg shot 43.9 percent (29-for-66) for the game and hit eight three-pointers. LC held a 50-41 advantage on rebounding as well.

Emory & Henry placed three players in double figures as well, led by junior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) who notched 15 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va.) recorded 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals while junior forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) had 13 points and six boards of her own.

The Wasps went cold from the field in the second half after shooting 42.9 percent (15-for-35) in the opening period. E&H led the was on second-chance points, 16-11, scored 19 points off of turnovers and finished with 34 points in the paint.

Emory & Henry will take to the road on Saturday for an ODAC contest against Bridgewater College. Tipoff between the Wasps and Eagles is set for 2:00 p.m.
