Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Holds Bridgewater, 66-63, Saturday On The Road

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (9-10, 4-6 ODAC) built a 1 6-point halftime lead over Bridgewater College (9-9, 4-6 ODAC) and held on through a strong second half rally by the Eagles for a 66-63 win Saturday afternoon at Nininger Hall.

The Wasps got out to a 12-3 lead at the 15:58 mark of the first half and extended their margin to 16 with 12:00 on the clock. An 11-2 run by BC closed the gap to 26-19 3:32 later, but the Wasps scored eight of the final 10 points of the opening 20 minutes to take a 40-24 advantage into the break.

Bridgewater opened the second half on a 15-4 run, getting within five points at 44-39. Finding themselves down by nine with 7:39 left to play, the Eagles score the next 10 points to take a 61-60 lead with 3:37 on the clock, their first advantage since going up 2-0 to open the contest.

The two teams traded points on their next possessions with the Wasps going back ahead for good, 64-63. A layup by senior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) made the score 66-63. BC had a chance to tie things up with 10 seconds left but E&H grabbed the rebound as was able to run out the clock for the win.

Emory & Henry had three players in double figure in scoring led by junior guard Anna Green (Raleigh, N.C.), who posted a career-high 17 points, hitting 7-of-12 field goals including three from beyond the arc. Junior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, adding three assists while sophomore guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) had 14 points, four rebounds, six assists and six steals. Langley finished the day with seven points and nine boards.

As a team, the Wasps shot 34.2 percent (27-for-79) from the field and hit seven shots from three-point range. E&H converted on all five of their free throw attempts in the contest and scored 31 points off the bench.

Bridgewater was paced by Jessica Lam's game-high 18 points while Oshene Kelly had 16 points and 12 boards. Jessi Strom added 12 points as she hit two of the Eagles' three treys in the game. BC shot 23-for-57 (40.4%) for the contest and made 14 free throws, though they only shot 53.8 percent (14-for-26) from the stripe. The 23 turnovers made the 16-point halftime deficit just too much to overcome despite the strong second-half rally.

Emory & Henry will return home on Wednesday when it hosts Roanoke College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game at 5:00 p.m. The contest, which will be the part of a doubleheader with the E&H men's team, will serve as the Wasps' annual Play4Kay game, with all donations benefiting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
