Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Defeats Roanoke, 72-60, Wednesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (10-10, 5-6 ODAC) solidified its first 10-win season since the 2005-06 campaign Wednesday afternoon with a 72-60 win over Roanoke College (7-13, 3-8 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The contest also served as the Wasps' annual Play4Kay game.

The contest was kept within three points either way for the first half with five ties and 13 lead changes coming in the opening 20 minutes alone. Emory & Henry carried a 32-29 lead into the locker room despite committing 13 turnovers thanks in part to 11 points on four-for-five shooting by freshman guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va.), who also hit a trio of three-pointers.

The first 12 and a half minutes of the second half resembled the first, with another nine ties and four lead changes culminating in a 53-all tie with 7:32 remaining on the clock. E&H went on a 13-2 run to go up 66-55 at the 3:51 mark. The Wasps fought off four-straight points by the Maroons and scored six of the final seven points of the contest for the final 72-60 margin.

Harris added five second-half points to finish the game with a team-high 16 points, and added four rebounds, five assists and three steals. E&H junior forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while junior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) had 14 points of her own to go along with eight boards. Sophomore guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) tallied seven points, four rebounds and nine assists while junior guard Anna Green (Raleigh, N.C.) added nine points off the bench.

As a team, the Wasps shot 43.9 percent (29-for-66) from the field and connected on seven three-pointers in the game. E&H responded with only five second-half turnovers after committing 13 miscues in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Roanoke was paced by Cary Beahm, who recorded 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting to go along with eight rebounds while Ellen Wagner added 10 points off the bench. Bridget Holleran had eight points while Kanisha Wiley pulled down 10 rebounds. The Maroons only managed to shoot 20-of-61 (32.8%) and missed all nine of their shots from long range. A 20-for-27 (74.1%) performance at the free throw line kept RC in the contest up until the final four minutes of play.

Emory & Henry will play its next two contests on the road, starting with a trip across the Commonwealth on Saturday to face off against Virginia Wesleyan College. The Wasps defeated the Marlins by a 75-62 score at Bob Johnson Court in January.
