Virginia Wesleyan Women’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 68-48, Saturday In ODAC Action

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College Women's Basketball Team (13-8, 7-5 ODAC) hit 12 three-pointers en route to a 68-48 win over Emory & Henry College (10-11, 5-7 ODAC), avenging its January 3 loss to the Wasps, Saturday afternoon at The Batten Center.

VWC got out to an 11-2 lead at the 14:39 mark of the first and held E&H to just 12.9 percent (four-for-31) shooting in the first 20 minutes of play. The Marlins took a 26-11 lead into the break after connecting on seven three's in the opening half.

A 7-2 scoring spurt by the Marlins in early in the second half pushed their advantage to 20 (39-19) with 14:46 on the clock. Emory & Henry closed the gap to 15 on three different occasions, but Virginia Wesleyan was able to respond to the Wasps' runs and led by as much as 25 in the final five minutes of play. Ninety seconds after the Marlins had their largest lead of the game, E&H got the score back to 20 on a three-pointer by freshman guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va.). The two teams traded baskets for the final two and a half minutes for the 68-48 final score.

Virginia Wesleyan was led by Kelly Jones, who made six three-pointers in the game for 18 points. Andrea Paphites added 14 points on a quartet of treys and had three assists while Cassie Conley had 14 points of her own. The Marlins, who scored 53 percent of their points from behind the arc, also held a 43-31 rebounding advantage in the game

Harris had 10 points six rebounds, two assists and two steals to pace the Wasps while senior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) and sophomore guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) each notched nine points. Junior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) notched six points, six rebounds and three steals. E&H shot just 31.0 percent (18-for-58) in the contest, hitting only 3-of-12 (25%) of its three-pointers. The Wasps held a 16-6 advantage on points in the paint but the Marlins' perimeter success was too much to overcome.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road on Wednesday when it travels to Roanoke, Virginia for a 7:00 p.m., contest against Hollins University. The Wasps won the first meeting between the two schools by a 73-48 score.
