Guilford Women’s Basketball Escapes With 73-71 Win Over Emory & Henry Thursday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Guilford College Women's Basketball Team (15-9, 9-6 ODAC) scored 24 second-chance points as it held off Emory & Henry College (12-12, 7-8 ODAC) 73-71 Thursday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at the John Rutledge King Center.

Emory & Henry got out to a 15-8 lead at the 14:16 mark of the first half and extended its advantage to 24-14 later in the period. The Quakers closed the margin to 30-29 with 3:50 to go before the break but the Wasps pulled back ahead 38-33 at the intermission.

The two squads traded baskets early in the second 20 minutes but an 11-0 run by Guilford gave it a 50-44 lead with 14:41 left to play. The Quakers extended their lead to 52-61 before an 8-0 run by the Wasps made the score 61-60. GC responded with seven straight points to go up 68-60, however E&H clawed its way back into the contest, getting to within two, 73-71, with 33 seconds left to play. The Wasps had a pair of chances to tie take the lead in the final 15 seconds of the game but were unable to get any closer as the final score remained 73-71.

Guilford saw four of its players score double figures led by Lauren Ramsey, who had a game-high 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting and added four rebounds and three assists. Anais Weatherly recorded 18 points, seven boards and three assists while Miranda Martin and Heaven Walters each had 10 points off the bench. Kali Cuttaia pulled down 13 boards as well for the Quakers.  As a team, GC shot 46.3 percent (31-for-67) for the game and held a 45-30 advantage on the boards en route to 34 points in the paint.

Emory & Henry junior forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) had a team-high 16 points and added seven rebounds while junior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) added 12 points and eight boards. Freshman guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va.) and sophomore guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) put up 13 points apiece with Jacoby dishing-out six assists. The Wasps hit 15-of-16 (93.8%) of their free throws and were 43.3 percent (26-for-60) from the field.

E&H will have its final regular season game of the year on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Lynchburg to face off against the WildCats of Randolph College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
