Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Blows By Agnes Scott, 85-44, Saturday In Comfort Inn Holiday Tournament

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (8-1) opened up a 21-point lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back as it defeated Agnes Scott College (1-11) by an 85-44 margin Saturday afternoon in the Comfort Inn Holiday Tournament. With the victory, the Wasps have won eight of their last 10 home contests dating back to last season and 13 of their last 16 games overall.

ASC scored the first basket of the game, but E&H came down the court and took the lead on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va.). The Wasps ran their advantage to 20-8 with 3:50 remaining in the opening period, extending the margin past 20 with just under seven minutes to play before the half (36-15). Emory & Henry would take a 49-30 lead into the locker room.

In the third quarter, the Scotties closed the gap to 57-40 with 4:06 on the clock but that spurred a 19-0 Emory & Henry run that spanned 5:32 for a 76-40 advantage with 7:19 to play. The Wasps ran their advantage over the 40-point mark in the final 100 seconds of the game for the 85-44 victory.

Emory & Henry saw all 17 players play at least four minutes in the contest and 14 of them find the scoring column. The Wasps were led offensively by senior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) with 11 points,  and added four rebounds and six assists. Senior forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) scored 10 points on five-for-seven shooting off the bench while junior guard Asja Jenkins (Richmond, Va.) had 10 points as well.

Freshman guard Taylor Blevins (Abingdon, Va.) notched eight points, eight rebounds and four steals while junior guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) had eight points, five assists and three steals. Harris and senior guard Anna Green (Raleigh, N.C.) each finished the game with eight points, hitting a pair of three's each.

Emory & Henry shot 53.7 percent (36-for-67) for the game and held a 48-6 advantage on points in the paint. The Wasps also scored 42 points off of 30 Agnes Scott turnovers and 16 points on the fast break.

The Scotties had the top two scorers in the game in Jalexis Teemer (15 points) and Laniqua Collins (13 points) but only six healthy players on the roster. Collins completed the double-double with 11 rebounds and added two assists and two steals. As a team, ASC shot just nine-for-40 (22.5%) for the game but connected on 22-of-28 (78.6%) of their free throws.

Emory & Henry will take on the University of Pikeville in the tournament championship on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The Bears, who are ranked No. 23 in NAIA Division I, defeated North Carolina Wesleyan College, 77-44, Saturday afternoon.
