Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Handles Hollins, 81-48, On Karina Farr’s Milestone Night

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (9-2, 3-0 ODAC) remained atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings Wednesday evening with an 81-48 victory over Hollins University (3-7, 0-3 ODAC) at the John Rutledge King Center. Senior guard Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) led all scorers with 18 points, scoring the 1,000th point of her career with 4:42 remaining in the fourth period. She becomes the 13th member of E&H's 1,000-point club, now sitting at 1,001 career points.

E&H, which led the entire game, got out to an 11-0 lead at the 7:39 mark of the first quarter. The Wasps had an 8-0 run to close the period for a 22-7 advantage after 10 minutes. Emory & Henry continued to build its lead through the second stanza, going up by as much as 22, and took a 40-19 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Wasps pushed their lead over the 30-point mark, outscoring Hollins 17-6 in the first eight minutes for a 57-25 advantage. Farr hit a pair of layups to cap the run, putting herself within five points of the milestone. E&H would lead 57-31 going into the final 10 minutes of play.

Emory & Henry and Hollins traded baskets early in the final quarter. Up by 26 with 7:37 to play, Farr scored six of the next eight points for the Wasps, going over the mark with a layup to make the score 71-40 with 4:42 left on the clock. Emory & Henry would lead by as much as 34 down the stretch, claiming the 81-48 win.

Farr was seven-for-11 from the field and four-for-five from the charity stripe for her 18 points, added seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Sophomore guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va.) had 15 points on a quartet of three-pointers, five rebounds and three assists. Freshman guards Taylor Blevins (Abingdon, Va.) and Jada Penn (Radford, Va.) added 10 points each while junior guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) dished out a game-high eight assists.

All 16 players who dressed for E&H saw at least four minutes of action in the game with 12 finding their way into the scoring column. The Wasps shot 52.4 percent (33-for-63) for the game including a gaudy 18-for-27 (66.7%) in the second half. Emory & Henry held a 46-29 rebounding advantage and led 40-18 in points in the paint, assisting on 25 of their 33 baskets.

Hollins had a pair of 10-point scorers in Sally Sroge and Nikki Valencia as Sroge added six rebounds and two steals. Valencia had three assists and two steals. As a team, HU shot just 31.6 percent (18-for-57) from the field but scored 22 points off of 26 E&H turnovers.

Emory & Henry will take to the road for its next two games, traveling to Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon for a 4:30 p.m., ODAC contest with the Eagles. The game will be the second of a doubleheader as the E&H men are set to take on BC at 2:00 p.m.
