LEXINGTON, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (13-4, 7-2 ODAC) made eight free throws in the final 37 seconds of play en route to a 68-63 road win over Washington and Lee University (10-8, 5-4 ODAC) Wednesday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The Wasps make it four straight with the victory and move into a tie for second place in the league standings.
E&H got out to an 11-5 lead midway through the first period but a 9-2 spurt by W&L put the Generals up 14-13 with 3:34 on the clock. The Wasps then went on a 20-6 run for their largest advantage of the game, 33-20, with 3:13 to go in the opening half. Washington and Lee closed the gap to 36-30 at the break thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers.
In the third quarter, the Generals responded to another double-digit deficit, cutting the margin to 49-45 with 10 minutes to play thanks to a 13-7 run. Emory & Henry answered early in the fourth frame, going back up by nine with 8:50 left but W&L scored 14 of the next 20 points to get within one (60-59) with 1:34 remaining. The Wasps scored their final eight points at the charity stripe, going eight-for-10, to leave the Warner Center with the 68-63 triumph.
Emory & Henry was led by senior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.), who put up a career-high 27 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the field to move into the top 10 in scoring in program history. She added 13 rebounds to complete the double-double. Freshman guard Taylor Blevins (Abingdon, Va.) scored 12 points and pulled down five boards while senior forward Amanda Stanley (Mooresville, N.C.) had eight points and five rebounds off the bench. Senior forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) added seven points and six rebounds and junior guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) pitched in four points, four rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
As a team, the Wasps shot 41.3 percent (26-for-63) from the field, leading 42-20 on points in the paint. E&H held a 43-32 rebounding advantage which they translated into a 14-7 margin on second-chance points. The Wasps also led the battle on points off turnovers, 22-8, on 16 miscues by the Generals.
Washington and Lee saw three players reach double figures in scoring. Shelbi Hendrix paced the field with 11 points and seven rebounds while Paige Corvino and Jackie Clifford added 10 points and seven boards each. Andrea Ferrero had nine points off the bench. As a team, the Generals went 23-for-57 (40.4%) on field goals, hitting eight three-pointers.
Emory & Henry will return home on Saturday to face off against Virginia Wesleyan College. Tipoff between the Wasps and Marlins is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., following the E&H men's game against Randolph-Macon College.
