Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Tops Washington and Lee, 72-55, Wednesday In ODAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (13-5, 6-3 ODAC) led wire-to-wire, holding off a strong third-quarter run by Washington and Lee University (11-6, 5-4 ODAC) en route to a 72-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory Wednesday evening at home.

How It Happened
- Emory & Henry raced out to a 10-0 advantage at the 6:09 mark of the opening quarter. The Wasps would lead by as many as 16 (20-4) before closing the period with a 22-8 advantage.
- The squads traded baskets back and forth during the second frame with E&H lead fluctuating between 10 and 16 points. The Wasps' double-digit margin remained at the half as they went into the intermission up 39-27.
- Returning to the court, the Generals scored seven in a row to close the margin to 39-34 with 7:34 on the third quarter clock. Eight straight points by Washington and Lee covering a span of 1:45 drew the score to one (44-43) as E&H held just a 47-45 advantage going into the final period.
- The Wasps put the game in the rearview mirror early in the fourth quarter with a 14-0 run lead 61-45. W&L trimmed the deficit to 11 with 3:02 remaining but E&H pushed back to lead by as much as 19 on its way to the 72-55 victory.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Junior forward Taylor Blevins (Abingdon, Va.) led the Wasps with 18 points and five rebounds, going 9-for-12 from the field.
- Sophomore forward Peyton Williams (Saltville, Va.) had 14 points, four rebounds, two steals and a block while sophomore forward Sydney McKinney (Big Stone Gap, Va.) tacked on 12 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks.
- Sophomore forward Kara Stafford (Bristol, Tenn.) contributed 12 points and five boards while junior guard Tessa Johnston (High Point, N.C.) added seven points off the bench.

Washington and Lee Individual Leaders
- Emily Perszyk provided the rallying cry for the Generals with 21 points, including an eight-for-eight performance at the line.
- Taylor Casey had 16 points of her own while Katie Popp notched eight points off the bench.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry finished the game at 28-for-55 (50.9%) from the field. The Wasps shot 76.5 percent (13-of-17) at the line.
- Washington and Lee made just 32.1 percent (17-of-53) of its shots, hitting five triples. The Generals' bright spot was a 16-of-22 (72.7%) effort from the stripe.
- Emory & Henry held a 39-30 rebounding advantage but W&L edged E&H 12-11 on second-chance points thanks to a 13-12 margin on the offensive glass.
- The Wasps doubled up the Generals down low, leading 44-22 on points in the paint.
- Washington and Lee posted a 26-17 margin on points off turnovers, taking advantage of 20 Emory & Henry miscues.
