MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 23 Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (2-0, 0-0 ODAC) picked up another key early season win Tuesday as it defeated Maryville (Tenn.) College (0-1, 0-0 USA South) by a 61-49 margin. The Scots are picked to finish third in the USA South West Division this year.

How It Happened
- The two teams traded the first baskets of the game before the Wasps went on an 8-0 run to lead 11-4 with 3:47 left in the opening period. E&H closed the quarter on a 7-2 for an 18-10 lead.
- Emory & Henry opened the second frame on an 8-2 run, forcing a Maryville timeout. After a scoring drought by both squads, the Scots closed the gap down to single digits for a 29-20 contest at the intermission.
- Coming out of the break, E&H opened the third with an 11-4 run to push its advantage to 40-24. The Wasps would get their largest lead of the game on an old-fashioned three-point play by junior guard Peyton Williams (Saltville, Va.) with 1:41 left in the third, 51-33.
- Maryville was able to get within eight points (55-47) midway through the fourth quarter, but Emory & Henry answered with five straight to kill the momentum and put the game out of reach as it cruised to the 61-49 win.
Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Junior forward Sydney McKinney (Big Stone Gap, Va.) posted a double-double with game-highs in points (21) and rebounds (13). She also added two assists, two steals and a block.
- Williams and senior forward Laken Blackburn (Wilkesboro, N.C.) had 10 points each with Williams pulling down three rebounds.
- Senior guards Tessa Johnston (High Point, N.C.) and Myesha Logan (Roanoke, Va.) had seven and six points, respectively.
Maryville Individual Leaders
- Libby Gardner led the Scots with 12 points and five rebounds while Kelley Wandell had eight points, nine boards and two blocks.
- Klaire Varney notched eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
A Deeper Look
- The two teams were meeting for the first time since the beginning of the 1999-00 season.
- Emory & Henry hit 21-of-57 (36.8%) of its field goals and made six three-pointers while Maryville shot just 28.6 percent (16-of-56) for the game.
- The Wasps held a 47-36 rebounding advantage and led the Scots by a 28-24 margin on points in the paint.
