Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Tops Virginia Wesleyan, 62-57, Sunday In ODAC Action

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (3-5) evened its Old Dominion Athletic Conference record at 3-3 with a 62-57 win over Virginia Wesleyan University (1-6, 0-4 ODAC) Sunday afternoon on the campus of University of Lynchburg.

How It Happened
- The Wasps scored the first six points of the game but the Marlins responded with 12 of the next 15 to take a 12-9 lead with 3:15 left in the opening period. E&H bounced back with a 6-2 run to go up 15-14 after 10 minutes of play.
- With Virginia Wesleyan leading by a 21-20 score at the 7:38 mark of the second, Emory & Henry put up a 19-3 run going into the intermission for a 39-24 advantage.
- E&H pushed its lead to 18 (42-24), scoring the first three points of the third period. After both teams went on a cold spell in the middle of the quarter, VWU closed the gap to 47-39 with the final seven points.
- In the fourth, the Wasps pushed back to extend their lead to 55-43 with 2:19 to play but the Marlins used a 7-0 run to make it a two possession game, 56-51 with 21 seconds to go. Emory & Henry made all six of its free throws down the stretch to hold off the rally for the 57-62 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Junior center Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) posted another double-double with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds while sophomore guard Brylee Jones (Greeneville, Tenn.) had 18 points off the bench.
- Senior forward Elizabeth Jones (Wytheville, Va.) put up 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks while senior guard Kylea Cooper (Hickory, N.C.) contributed six points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals.

Virginia Wesleyan Individual Leaders
- Jessica Jennings led the Marlins with 14 points including four three-pointers while Adaje Williams notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.
- S'Zahria Jones went for 12 points and seven rebounds as Cayden Boyd chipped in eight points and five rebounds off the bench.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry made just 32.4 percent (22-of-68) of its field goal attempts and were 15-for-24 (62.5%) from the free throw line.
- Virginia Wesleyan shot just 17-for-54 (31.5%) for the game but made six three-pointers. The Marlins hit 77.3 percent (17-of-22) of their free throws.
- VWU posted a 48-41 rebounding advantage but E&H dominated the scoring down low, 36-16.
- The Wasps forced 24 Marlin turnovers, scoring 17 points on their ensuing possessions while Virginia Wesleyan scored 14 points on 15 E&H miscues.
