Coker Women’s Basketball Holds Off Emory & Henry, 78-74, In SAC Opener Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Coker University Women's Basketball Team (6-1, 1-0 SAC) opened up a 14-point lead early in the second period and held off a strong rally by Emory & Henry College (4-3, 0-1 SAC) for a 78-74 South Atlantic Conference win Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
- The Cobras stormed out to a 10-0 lead three minutes into the contest. E&H closed the margin to five at 16-11 later in the frame but a 12-4 Coker run to close the period made it 28-15 after 10 minutes.
- Coker pressed its margin early in the second, going up by a 29-15 scoreline. Trailing by 14 (32-18) with 7:37 to go before the intermission, Emory & Henry went on a 16-6 scoring spurt to get within four at 38-34 at the half.
- The two squads traded baskets early in the third. With the score 50-45, the Cobras put together a 10-3 run to extend their margin to 12 at 60-48. The Wasps responded with a 14-2 run of their own to trim the deficit to six (62-56) with one quarter left to play.
- E&H continued the run to start the fourth, hitting a pair of shots to get within two. An 8-2 run by Coker kept Emory & Henry at arm's length (70-62) with 5:55 on the clock. Trailing by six, the Wasps scored four in a row to close the gap to 76-74 with 2:18 remaining but missed their final three field goal attempts as the Cobras went 2-for-4 at the stripe to hold on for the 78-74 win.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- All 10 players who played for E&H found their way into the scorebook, led by sophomore forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) with a team-high 22 points, adding five rebounds and three blocks while junior guard Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) went for 16 points, nine boards and four assists.
- Junior guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) had nine points and four rebounds as freshman guard Addie Phipps (Mount Airy, N.C.) posted nine points and four steals off the bench.

Coker Individual Leaders
- Dasia Lambert posted a game-high 24 points, hitting on six three-pointers, to go along with four rebounds, four steals and two assists while Kristynn Knight had 15 points and five boards.
- Mya Wasswa tallied 10 points, three rebounds and three steals as Shawntenna Tillman tacked on nine points off the bench.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 50 percent (25-for-50) for the game with a trio of three-pointers. The Wasps were 21-for-30 (70%) at the free throw line.
- Coker made 29-of-67 (43.3%) of its field goal attempts and connected on nine shots from long range. The Cobras shot just 47.8 percent (11-for-23) at the charity stripe.
- E&H held a 42-31 rebounding advantage and edged Coker by a 12-10 margin on second-chance points.
- The Cobras forced the Wasps into 25 turnovers, scoring 23 points on their ensuing possessions. E&H was efficient with 21 points off 16 Coker miscues.
- The two teams worked inside, scoring nearly half of the game's points in the paint.

- Emory & Henry will step out of SAC and Division II play on Monday when it visits Wofford College for an exhibition game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., in what will be the second meeting in as many years between the Wasps and Terriers.
