Emory & Henry Women's Basketball Rallies To Defeat UVA Wise, 76-72, Wednesday In Southwest Virginia Rivalry

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (5-5, 1-2 SAC) earned its first South Atlantic Conference win of the year in thrilling fashion over Southwest Virginia rival the University of Virginia's College at Wise (4-5, 1-3 SAC) Wednesday evening. The Wasps took advantage of an 18-0 scoring run in the fourth quarter to propel themselves to a 76-72 win over the Cavaliers.

How It Happened
- UVA Wise scored the first seven points of the contest to take a 7-0 lead two minutes into the game. E&H woke up and went on a 20-6 run for a 20-13 advantage at the end of the opening stanza.
- In the second, the Cavaliers started with a 10-2 run to go ahead 23-22 with 6:01 on the clock. The two squads traded baskets before Wise put together another 10-2 run to lead 35-28 at the half.
- Returning to action, the Cavaliers scored the first five points to push their advantage to 40-28 in the first 36 seconds of the period but the Wasps trimmed the deficit to five at 46-41 with 5:22 on the clock. Wise responded with a 12-5 run to close the period to lead, 62-46, with one period to play.
- The two teams went shot-for-shot early in the fourth before both went cold from the field. Trailing 68-53 with 6:10 on the clock, Emory & Henry scored 18 points in a row over the course over 3:51 to go ahead 71-68 with 2:19 to play. The Cavaliers trimmed the lead to one but would get no closer as the Wasps converted five of their final six free throws to seal the victory, 76-72.

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Freshman forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) led E&H with 17 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Hannah Spainhour (King, N.C.) had 15 points, five boards, four steals and two assists, going 8-for-10 from the free throw line.
- Freshman guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) put up 14 points and six rebounds off the bench with junior Grace Glance (Clyde, N.C.) notching 12 points, four rebounds and two steals.
- Junior forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) contributed eight points, nine rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks.

UVA Wise Individual Leaders
- Caitlyn Ross led all scorers 24 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals as Sarah Burton had 21 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
- Allyson Fleenor and Mackenzie Bremer posted nine and eight points off the bench, respectively while Katlin Burger went for six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 34.8 percent (24-for-69) for the game with 11 three-pointers, nine of which were made in the second half. The Wasps hit 17-of-24 (70.8%) of their free throw chances.
- UVA Wise made 29-of-61 (47.5%) of their field goal attempts including six beyond the arc. The Cavaliers went 61.5 percent (8-for-13) at the charity stripe.
- Wise held a 43-40 rebounding advantage but E&H used 15 offensive rebounds to lead 13-5 on second-chance points.
- The Wasps led 17-7 on points off turnovers, taking advantage of 20 Cavalier miscues.
