Rowan Women’s Soccer Blanks Emory & Henry, 6-0, Sunday Afternoon

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Rowan University Women's Soccer Team (4-0) was able to score three goals in each half as it defeated Emory & Henry College (0-5) Sunday afternoon in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The contest took place on the campus of the University of Mary Washington at Battlefield Green.

Rowan, a vote-getter in the 2013 NSCAA Preseason Poll and 2012 NCAA Division III Tournament Second Round participant, got started when Emory & Henry's clear attempt on an 8th-minute corner kick ended up in the net for an own goal.

Later in the half, Lisa Cella linked up with Kayla Leahey for the second score of the match. At the 28:18 mark, Miranda Donnian made it 3-0 as she cleaned up her own deflected shot. The 3-0 margin would hold for the rest of the half.

Emory & Henry fought for the entire 90 minutes of the contest as injuries forced three attacking Wasps to the sideline. The back line of senior Kasey Simmons (Chesapeake, Va.), junior Brittney Horn (Lawndale, N.C.), sophomore Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) and freshman Willow Hubbard (Asheville, N.C.) made it tough for the Owls' forwards, throwing everything they had in their way.

After a 30-minute scoreless period, Leahey got on the assisting end of things and Tiffany Kelly put a shot past the keeper, 1:08 before the hour mark. The final two scores came in the final 10 minutes of play with Megan Carchidi and Samantha Reeder finding the back of the net.

E&H senior goalkeeper Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) made 10 saves in the contest as the Owls outshot the Wasps, 21-1. Rowan's Carleigh Trivino and Jamie Cheeka combined for the shutout win. Emory & Henry forced RU attackers of be called offside nine different times in the match.

Emory & Henry will now prepare for more familiar competition as the Wasps will travel to face Ferrum College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. When the teams met last season, E&H came away with a 2-0 victory at Fred Selfe Stadium.  The Wasps have won three of the last five meetings with the Panthers.
