Ferrum Women’s Soccer Holds Off Emory & Henry, 3-1, Wednesday Afternoon

FERRUM, Va. – The Ferrum College Women's Soccer Team (3-2) was able to get past Emory & Henry College (0-6) thanks to a three-goal outing by Morgan Funck in non-conference play Wednesday evening at Penn-Roediger Field.

The two sides battled through the first half with neither side seeming to have an advantage. In the 39th minute, Funck netted her first goal of the match. Just before halftime, Funck found the back of the net again to make the score 2-0 at the break.

The contest continued to be close though the second half as the E&H defense was able to turn away several of Ferrum's attacks behind strong play from senior Kasey Simmons (Chesapeake, Va.) and freshman Willow Hubbard (Asheville, N.C.).

At the 59:48 mark, the Panthers earned a penalty kick after being fouled inside the box. Funck stepped to the spot and converted the try to complete the hat trick.

Emory & Henry spoiled the shutout with 7:36 remaining in the contest. Freshman forward Erin Kirk (Lexington, Va.) found herself on the receiving end of a free kick that bounced around in the box and hammered it into the roof of the goal. Senior midfielder Ashlie Caldwell (Blue Ridge, Va.) was credited with the assist.

Ferrum's Caitlyn Deaton made five saves as she picked up the win in goal while senior Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) stopped four shots for E&H.

The Wasps outshot the Panthers by a 13-11 margin as the two squads tied 1-1 on corner kicks. Emory & Henry's defense forced Ferrum offside on four separate occasions during the contest.

Emory & Henry will return home on Saturday evening when it opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play against Bridgewater College. Kicoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
