Bridgewater Women’s Soccer Nips Emory & Henry, 1-0, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Bridgewater College Women's Soccer Team (3-3, 1-0 ODAC) got all that it could handle from Emory & Henry College (0-7, 0-1 ODAC) Saturday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Fred Selfe Stadium. The Eagles were able to come away with the 1-0 victory to open league play.

The two squads battled through a scoreless first half, and though the Wasps were outshot by a 10-2 margin, they held strong against the deeper and larger Eagles.

Bridgewater finally broke through 7:23 into the second half. After earning a corner kick, Michelle Viegas swung in the offering and Nikole Blackwell placed a header into the lower left corner of the goal.

E&H threatened several times late in the match including a barrage of shots in the 66th minute that were blocked by the Bridgewater defense. The Wasps had an opportunity in the final moments of the contest on a corner kick, but freshman Katherine DeBusk's (Fluvanna, Va.) header was wide of the goal.

Senior midfielder Kasey Simmons (Chesapeake, Va.) led the way with three shots while junior forward Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) had two attempts on the goal.

The Eagles outshot the Wasps, 24-9, and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks but were forced offside on seven different occasions. E&H senior goalkeeper Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) made 12 saves in the match.

Emory & Henry will travel to Sweet Briar College on Wednesday afternoon for a 4:30 p.m. ODAC contest with the Vixens.
