EMORY, Va. – The No. 11 Lynchburg College Women's Soccer Team moved to 8-1 (3-0 ODAC) on the year Tuesday afternoon as it defeated Emory & Henry College (1-8-1, 1-2-1 ODAC) by a 6-2 score at Fred Selfe Stadium.
The perennial Old Dominion Athletic Conference power Hornets had trouble getting things going in the first half thanks to heads up play by the Wasps' back line and goalkeeper. While senior Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) only had two saves in her 58:24 played, she intercepted countless crosses that would have opened up easy scoring opportunities for Lynchburg.
LC got on the board with 8:11 on the clock before halftime. Erin Benson settled a loose ball off a corner kick on the top right corner of the 18 yard box and placed it in the net. The Hornets scored again two minutes later as Camille Bartley got just enough on her shot to put it past the outstretched arms of the keeper.
After the break, things settled back down for nearly 15 minutes of play as Emory & Henry began to retain possession more effectively. Lynchburg got back going in the 59th minute as Dessi Dupuy dribbled down the center of the pitch past the defender and finished to the left side. Dupuy made the score 4-0 four and a half minutes later as she snuck home a loose ball inside the six-yard box.
Lynchburg got two more goals to make the largest margin of the match 6-0 as Jade Woll and Morgan Singer each found the back of the net at the 67:06 and 74:29 mark.
The final 15 minutes of the contest showed promise for Emory & Henry as it was able to put two scores past the Lynchburg defense and goalkeeper. Senior forward Jessi Biggs (Vienna, Va.) took a shot from the middle of the 18-yard box that went high over the goalkeeper to spoil the shutout with 13:45 on the clock.
E&H got its second goal in the 83rdd minute. After earning a throw-in on the right side of the field, junior forward Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.) went off to the races with the Lynchburg defender, beating her to the box and finishing to the lower left hand side of the goal.
The two goals scored by Emory & Henry are the most in program history against Lynchburg, which has won 11 of the last 16 ODAC titles and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in eight of the last nine seasons.
E&H freshman goalkeeper Vicki Fenley (Chesapeake, Va.) made three saves in the final 31:36 of the match, coming off the bench. The Wasps put four of their five shots on goal, but the Hornets had 21 attempts in the contest.
The Wasps will travel to Lynchburg, Va. on Saturday afternoon to take on the WildCats of Randolph College at 1:00 p.m., in an ODAC matchup.
