Roanoke Women’s Soccer Slips By Emory & Henry, 1-0, Wednesday Afternoon

SALEM, Va. – The Roanoke College Women's Soccer Team (7-6-1, 5-3 ODAC) got the one goal it needed for a 1-0 victory over visiting Emory & Henry College (3-11-1, 3-5-1 ODAC) Wednesday afternoon at Kerr Field.

The Wasps and Maroons battled to a 0-0 tie at the half with Roanoke holding a 7-0 advantage on shots and a 13-0 margin on corner kicks through 45 minutes.

The second half, though more evenly matched, featured the difference-maker in the contest. Early in the 58th minute, Carolyn Sarbacher found Courtney Yoke with a pass ahead and Yoke shot the ball into the right side of the goal for the 1-0 lead in favor of Roanoke.

Emory & Henry nearly tied things up three and a half minutes later as sophomore Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) had a pair of back-to-back shots, one which hit the post and the other which was saved by the defense.

The score would remain the same for the final 30 minutes as the Maroons claimed the 1-0 win.

Roanoke outshot E&H by a 13-5 margin and held a 17-1 advantage on corner kicks. Emory & Henry forced four offside calls in the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Jerome (Charlotte, N.C.) made six saves on the afternoon for the Wasps while Sarbarcher had two saves and the shutout for the Maroons.

Emory & Henry will return home on Sunday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m., contest with Guilford College. The match will serve as Senior Day for the Wasps.
