Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Marymount, 2-0, Sunday For First Win Of The Year

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (1-3) picked up its first win of the 2014 season Sunday morning as it defeated Marymount University (0-4-1) by a 2-0 score at Fred Selfe Stadium. The match was part of the 2014 Emory & Henry Soccer Invitational.

The Wasps and Saints battled for a scoreless opening 45 minutes, each team tallying six shots. Marymount put three of its attempts on frame, but Emory & Henry freshman goalkeeper Kayla Wright (Franklin County, Va.) turned them all away.

In the second half, the pace of the match quickened with the two squads playing a more fluid back-and-forth style of soccer. E&H got on the board 19:30 into the second half when freshman defender Daishi Dudley (Rocky Mount, Va.) finished off a rebound from senior forward Bethany Myer's (Hickory, N.C.) shot that was saved by the keeper.

Emory & Henry won a corner kick in the 79th minute setting up its second goal. Sophomore midfielder Gabby Paspa (Hickory, N.C.) served in a ball that was flicked on by Myer to Dudley, who put it in the back of the net.

Marymount had its opportunities to get back into the match, putting five shots on frame in the second half, but Wright made great stops to keep the Saints off the board. Both teams finished the match with 13 shots while Emory & Henry held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks and stopped eight Marymount attacks with offside calls.

Wright earned her first career shutout, making eight saves on the day while Holly Wenger made four saves despite the loss.

The E&H men also picked up a win Sunday afternoon, marking the first time since a September 5, 2012 doubleheader with Ferrum College that both soccer teams won at home on the same day. The Wasps will have an opportunity to repeat Sunday's performance on Wednesday afternoon when Ferrum visits Fred Selfe Stadium for a doubleheader. The women's game will begin at 5:00 p.m., while the men are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m., kickoff.
