Washington and Lee Women’s Soccer Defeats Emory & Henry, 3-1, Wednesday In Season Finale

EMORY, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Women's Soccer Team (13-1-1, 11-1 ODAC) earned a 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Emory & Henry College (4-13, 3-9 ODAC) Wednesday afternoon at Fred Selfe Stadium. It was the final match of the regular season for both squads.

Still in the mix for the final spot in the 2014 ODAC Tournament, the Wasps came out strong against the Generals and used a bend-not-break approach to their defense, repelling multiple attacks in the early goings of the contest.

Just 70 seconds before the halftime whistle W&L got on the board. Haley Ward swung in a corner that was taken by Lauren Abraham and hit into the middle of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

After the break, Emory & Henry leveled the score, 1-1, midway through the 49th minute. Senior forward Bethany Myer (Hickory, N.C.) crossed a ball in from the right side of the box to the feet of senior midfielder Erica Merriman (Cornelius, N.C.). Merriman ripped a shot to the right side of the net for her second score of the year.

Washington and Lee went back on top at the 54:20 mark when Tricia Jessee took a pass from Holley Beasley and then went down the middle of the field to beat the goalkeeper to the right side.

Jessee made it a 3-1 advantage with 22:20 to go on a cross from Becca Dunn that she put in the left corner of the frame.

Emory & Henry had opportunities to close the gap late, but the W&L goalkeeper turned them away.

The Generals held a 12-2 advantage on corner kicks and put 14 of their 24 shots on frame. E&H forced W&L offside on three different occasions in the match.

Addie Healy earned the win in goal for Washington and Lee while Emory & Henry freshman Kayla Wright (Franklin County, Va.) made 11 saves despite the loss.

The Wasps will now await the announcement of the All-ODAC Teams which will be released with the conclusion of the 2014 ODAC Tournament.
