Emory & Henry’s Payton Shirey Named ODAC Swimmer Of The Week

FOREST, Va. – Emory & Henry College freshman Payton Shirey has been selected as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week, ODAC officials announced Monday. It is the third time this season that a Wasp has earned the honor. E&H is currently 5-0 on the year in dual meets and holds a 3-0 record against conference competition.

The Seaford, Del. native led Emory & Henry to a 96-83 win over King (Tenn.) College Friday afternoon at the E&H Aquatics Center. The Wasps won eight of the 11 races with only six swimmers in the water against the NCAA Division II foe.

Shirey won both of her individual races, putting up a school-record :28.07 in the 50-meter freestyle. She also won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:05.12.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Shirey was the anchor for the Wasps as they went under 2:00 for the first time in school history with a time of 1:59.68. E&H won the relay by 8.2 seconds.

Emory & Henry has the weekend off for Thanksgiving and will next compete at the Sewanee Winter Invitational on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1.
