Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Sets 17 School Records At Sewanee Winter Invitational

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team set 17 school records en route to a third-place finish at the Sewanee Winter Invitational this weekend. The Wasps scored in the top two in four of the five relays and picked up 11 top-three finishes in individual events with just seven swimmers in the water. No Emory & Henry swimmer finished lower than eighth in any event.

Lauren Frizzell (Blacksburg, Va.) picked up three of E&H's individual wins, setting school records in the process. She placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.74), the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.36) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:18.80). Through the first half of the season, Frizzell has not been beaten in any race she has entered.

Also earning event wins were Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.) and Taylor Guardalabene (Charlotte, N.C.). Shirey touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.86) and was second in the 100-free (:55.69), just :0.20 behind first place, to break two E&H records. Guardalabene was first in the 400-yard individual medley, clocking a 4:46.26, and picked up third place finishes in the 200-IM (2:16.22) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.69), setting school records in the process.

Tyler Ann Herron (Calhoun, Ga.) had two school-best swims in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke (1:10.49 and 2:40.18) finishing second in the 100-breast, while also picking up a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.

Sam Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) and Nicole Powell (Apex, N.C.) finished third in the 100-yard backstroke and the 1,650-freestyle, respectively as Brown broke the E&H record with a time of 1:07.19 and Powell's 2:24.12 was also a school record.

All five of Emory & Henry's relays set new school records. The 200-yard freestyle relay of Shirey, Herron, Guardalabene and Brown won the event, registering a 1:41.32 to finish first by :0.16. The 400-freestyle, 200-medley and 400-medley relays each finished second with the 800-yard freestyle relay bringing home a third-place finish.

The Wasps will next compete on Saturday, January 19, 2013 when it they travel to Bridgewater, Va., for a double-dual meet with ODAC foes Bridgewater College and Notre Dame University of Maryland.
