Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Sweeps At Warren Wilson To Finish 9-1 In Dual Meets

SWANNANOA, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team picked up a trio of dual victories Saturday afternoon at Warren Wilson College. With the wins, the Wasps solidify a 9-1 (5-1 ODAC) dual meet record for the regular season.

Emory & Henry defeated Warren Wilson, 140-78; LaGrange College, 140-62; and Greensboro College 133-80 as the Wasps finished first in 12 of the 13 events of the day.

Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.) won all three of her individual events and led off on the 200-yard freestyle relay (:25.43) which finished first. Shirey posted a :25.00 in the 50-yard freestyle, a :56.47 in the 100-yard freestyle and won the 50-yard butterfly with a time of :27.84.

Also winning all three of her individual events was Taylor Guardalabene (Charlotte, N.C.). She bested the field with swims of :34.85 and 1:15.96 in the 50-yard and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively and came away with a solid win in the 400-yard individual medley (5:01.46). Guardalabene swam the breaststroke leg of the 200-yard medley relay helping E&H to the victory.

Lauren Frizzell (Blacksburg, Va.) had individual wins in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.12) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.16) and swam legs of the 200-yard free and 200-yard medley relays.

Picking up two individual wins with one second-place finish was Nicole Powell (Apex, N.C.). She won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:46.96, beating her closest competition by over 45 seconds. Powell won the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.11) and finished second behind Guardalabene in the 400-yard individual medley.

Sam Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) had second-place finishes in the 50-yard and 100-yard backstroke and anchored both relays while Sophia Alonge (Vienna, Va.) finished third in the 50-yard freestyle and 50-yard backstroke and swam a solid third leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay to help keep the Wasps in the lead.

Emory & Henry will conclude the 2012-13 season at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships in two weeks. The meet will run from Friday, February 8 to Sunday, February 10 and will be held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
