Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Continues To Impress In 2013 ODAC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team kept its momentum going in Day Two of the 2013 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships Saturday. The Wasps are six points out of third place with one day to go in their inaugural season as a varsity program.

Tyler Ann Herron (Calhoun, Ga.) finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a school-record time of 1:08.56, the second time she broke the best mark for the day. Sophia Alonge (Vienna, Va.) came in 13th-place, swimming a 1:16.72 in the consolation finals.

Taylor Guardalabene (Charlotte, N.C.) took third in the 100-yard butterfly, beating her own record with a swim of 1:00.44. Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.) won the consolation final as she put up a time of 1:02.14.

Lauren Frizzell (Blacksburg, Va.) earned sixth-place in the 200-yard freestyle, nearly breaking the two-minute mark (2:00.14), Nicole Powell (Apex, N.C.) was seventh in the 400-yard individual medley (4:53.26) and Sam Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) turned in a time of 1:04.64 to place eighth in the 100-yard backstroke.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Frizzell, Herron, Guardalabene and Shirey swam a 1:52.31 to break the Emory & Henry record, finishing third. Their swim was just .14 seconds off of second place.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the Wasps got their second third-place relay finish of the day. Frizzell, Powell, Brown and Guardalabene posted a time of 8:10.43 to finish solidly in third place.

Emory & Henry will be back in the water at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.

SATURDAY PRELIMS

All seven of the Wasps' individual entries qualified for tonight's finals and E&H saw another relay post a top-time in prelims.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Lauren Frizzell (Blacksburg, Va.), Tyler Ann Herron (Calhoun, Ga.), Taylor Guardalabene (Charlotte, N.C.) and Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.) swam a 1:54.71 to qualify first and was just .01 away from setting a new school record.

Nicole Powell (Apex, N.C.) turned in a time of 4:57.94 in the 400-yard individual medley, which was good for seventh in tonight's final.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Guardalabene is in the finals after swimming a 1:01.10, good for the fifth spot. Shirey was 12th-quickest and will be in the consolation finals with a 1:05.25.

Frizzell is in the finals of the 200-yard freestyle with a fifth-place qualifying time of 2:00.88.

Herron posted the second-best time in the 100-yard breaststroke, a school-record 1:09.05, to qualify second while Sophia Alonge (Vienna, Va.) is in the consolation final at 14th-place (1:17.08).

In the 100-yard backstroke, Sam Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) came in seeded 11th and posted an eighth-place time of 1:04.32 to make the finals.
