Five From Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Named To All-ODAC Teams

FOREST, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming team saw five of its seven members named to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams, ODAC officials announced Friday. Four Wasps were named to the All-ODAC First Team, second only to Washington and Lee University's 11 first-team selections. Randolph-Macon College rounded out the 17-swimmer squad with two first-team honorees.

The all-conference teams were determined by placement in events at the 2013 ODAC Swimming Championships. Those placing first or second in individual events earned first team distinction, while third and fourth place finishers were tabbed to the second team. The third team is comprised of fifth and sixth place swimmers.

Lauren Frizzell (Blacksburg, Va.), Taylor Guardalabene (Charlotte, N.C.), Tyler Ann Herron (Calhoun, Ga.) and Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.) were named to the All-ODAC First Team while Nicole Powell (Apex, N.C.) earned third-team honors.

Shirey won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle while Frizzell took the title in the 1650-yard freestyle. They became E&H's first individual conference champions since Ruthy Woodring won the 1991 cross country title and the first champions of any kind since the 2003 softball team. Shirey is also the first woman in Emory & Henry history to win two individual ODAC Championships.

Shirey's time of :23.98 in the 50-yard freestyle was an ODAC record, breaking a mark that had stood since 1997. Shirey was also part of a second-place 200-yard freestyle relay and third-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Frizzell dominated the 1650-yard freestyle (18:00.54), beating her nearest competition by nearly 12 seconds. She also finished third in the 500-yard freestyle and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle. She also guided the Wasps to third-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay, the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Guardalabene took second in the 200-yard individual medley, was third in the 200-yard butterfly and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. She was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay which finished second and the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays which were third fastest. Guardalabene finished no worse than fourth in any of the seven events she swam.

Herron claimed second in the 100-yard breaststroke and was ninth in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle. She also helped E&H finish second in the 200-yard freestyle relay and third in the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Powell turned in a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly as she was named Third-Team All-ODAC. She also put up seventh-place finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley and was part of the third-place 800-yard freestyle relay.

On the weekend, Emory & Henry broke 18 school records, with the 50-yard freestyle mark falling three times on Friday. The 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle records were broken twice. The Wasps also put up new bests in three of the five relays.

Washington and Lee's Caroline Hamp was named the ODAC Swimmer of the Year, while teammates Emma Swabb and Delaney Rolfe were tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year and the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively. Bridgewater's Fran Smith received ODAC Coach of the Year honors. Hollins University swimmer Michelle Douglas was named the Bonnie Kestner Sportsmanship Award recipient.
