Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Finishes Second At 2015 ODAC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team won five of the six events in the final day of the 2015 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships, finishing second in the meet for the second year in a row. The Wasps completed the weekend with a total of nine event wins.

E&H got the evening off to a strong start with a victory in the 1650-yard freestyle. Junior Taylor Guardalabene (Charlotte, N.C.) swam an 18:10.22 to win the event by nearly 18 seconds. Freshman Holly Roth (Albuquerque, N.M.) was fourth (18:50.29) while junior Nicole Powell (Apex, N.C.) finished fifth in 18:52.89. Sophomore Lauren Blakey (Davidson, N.C.) claimed 13th, achieving her time during the morning session.

Freshman Marina Moore (Thomasville, N.C.) finished sixth in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming a 2:11.22 while sophomore Jordan Greenburg (Cordova, Tenn.) was seventh (2:11.93). Junior Sam Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) was first in the consolation final, with a time of 2:17.71 for a ninth-place overall finish.

In the 100-yard freestyle, sophomore Jessica Richardson (Vero Beach, Fla.) set a new Emory & Henry record and won the event with a swim of :52.74 while freshman Mackenzie Lingle (Roanoke, Va.) was fifth (:54.33) and junior Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.) was seventh (:55.03). Sophomore Kia Hamilton (Memphis, Tenn.) swam in the consolation finals for a 10th-place finish (:57.78).  

Sophomore Michaela Nolte (Hillsborough, N.C.) successfully defended her championship in the 200-yard breaststroke, bettering her NCAA "B" Cut as she finished in 2:22.07. Freshman Kelsey Jones (Roanoke, Va.) took home fourth place (2:29.24) and freshman Brianna Chessock (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was 11th (2:39.02).

Wasp sophomore Allison Fowler (Morristown, Tenn.) made it back-to-back titles in the 200-yard butterfly swimming a 2:06.26 to set a new Emory & Henry record and achieve a Division III "B" Cut. Powell went 2:18.93 for eighth.

Emory & Henry got its fifth win of the night in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a new ODAC-record time of 3:30.20, which was also good enough for a NCAA Qualifying mark. Richardson swam a :52.48 on the leadoff leg to break her own school record in the 100-free, while also eclipsing the meet record for the distance. Fowler, Nolte and Lingle swam the final three legs to give the Wasps their most-ever event wins in a single conference championship meet.

Washington and Lee University won the ODAC Championship for the eighth-straight year, earning 936 points while E&H scored 728 points. It was the closest margin in the meet since the 2011 season when W&L won by 202 points. Randolph-Macon College was third (527 points).

Emory & Henry will await the announcement of the 2015 All-ODAC Teams which will be released early in the week. The Wasps that have NCAA Qualifying Standards will learn if they if they have been selected to compete at the 2015 NCAA Division III Championship on Wednesday, February 25.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team is in a great position for multiple event wins in the final day of the 2015 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship. The Wasps have the top seed in five of the six events this evening.

E&H started the day off the 200-yard backstroke. Moore is seeded fourth with a time of 2:09.97 while Greenburg is eighth (2:12.17). Brown will be in the consolation final this evening, earning the 10th seed.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Richardson and Lingle are separated by just .02 seconds for first and second (:53.32 and :53.34). Shirey has the seventh seed (:56.15) while Hamilton is seeded 10th.

Nolte is set up to defend her title in the 200-yard breaststroke with a swim of 2:24.16 this morning. Jones was fourth quickest in the prelims (2:30.04) while Chessock went 2:39.13 for the ninth seed.

The 200-yard butterfly sees Emory & Henry in the top spot with Fowler ready to win the event for a second year in a row. She swam a 2:09.71 in the morning while Powell earned the seven seed (2:16.40).

The Wasps also have the quickest time going into finals in the 400-yard freestyle relay, going 3:43.18. The 1650-yard freestyle which has been seeded based on 1000-yard freestyle times from the regular season sees Guardalabene in the front-runner position while Powell is eighth.

Emory & Henry will conclude the 2015 ODAC Championships on Sunday evening with the first events set for 5:30 p.m.
