Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Splits Double Duel With King And Carson-Newman Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team (6-1) posted a 1-1 day against a pair of NCAA Division II teams, Saturday afternoon at the Emory & Henry Aquatics Center. The meet served as Senior Day for E&H as Sophia Alonge (Vienna, Va.), Sam Brown (Memphis, Tenn.), Taylor Guardalabene (Charlotte, N.C.) and Nicole Powell (Apex, N.C.) were honored prior to the first race.

The Wasps defeated the Lady Tornado of King (Tenn.) University, 168-26, but fell to the Carson-Newman University Lady Eagles by a 143-62 score. As members of Division II, both King and Carson-Newman offer athletic scholarships with C-N fully-funding their program.

Emory & Henry set a trio of school records on the day, besting its previous top marks in the 100-meter breaststroke, 400-meter freestyle relay and 400-meter medley relay. The first record to fall was the 400-medley relay. Sophomore Marina Moore (Thomasville, N.C.), junior Michaela Nolte (Hillsborough, N.C.), freshman Claire Goodrum (Versailles, Ky.) and sophomore Mackenzie Lingle (Roanoke, Va.) stopped the watches in 4:38.20 to beat the previous best by nearly 8.5 seconds.

Nolte continued her dominance in the breaststroke events, breaking her own record in the 100-meter breaststroke. She posted a 1:15.80 to finish first overall in the event and drop the previous E&H best by 1.48 seconds.

The Wasps completed the meet with another relay record, this time in the 400-meter freestyle relay. Guardalabene, freshman Adaira Brewer (Raleigh, N.C.), Moore and junior Jessica Richardson (Vero Beach, Fla.) turned in a time of 4:17.99, crushing the old record by over 17 seconds.

Though C-N took first place in 10 of the 11 events overall, Emory & Henry posted six second-place finishes on the afternoon, including both of the relays. Guardalabene was second in both the 800-meter and 400-meter freestyle while Nolte was second in the 50-meter freestyle and Richardson came in second in the 100-meter freestyle.

E&H will close out the regular season with its final dual meet on Saturday, January 30. The Wasps will travel to Greensboro College where they will face off against Greensboro, Ferrum College and Randolph-Macon College. The first event is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
