Emory & Henry Women’s Tennis Competes In Three Matches Over The Weekend

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Tennis Team is now in the midst of Old Dominion Athletic Conference play after three matches at the Duchossois Tennis Center on the campus of Washington and Lee University. The Wasps defeated the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College, 5-3, on Saturday, but suffered defeats at the hands of Virginia Wesleyan College and Washington and Lee.

Match One – Virginia Wesleyan 5, Emory & Henry 1
The Marlins got out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the contest and took two singles matches to reach completion over the Wasps. Emory & Henry got its lone point at number one singles, as sophomore Alyssa Wingate (Independence, Va.) won by default.

Match Two – Emory & Henry 5, Randolph-Macon 3
Emory & Henry picked up its first ODAC win of the 2012 season late Saturday evening over Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets led 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match, winning the second and third flights. E&H's Wingate and freshman Sarah Vishnev (Mooresville, N.C.) won by an 8-6 score at number one doubles.

In singles competition, Wingate and Vishnev both came away with clean sweep victories as neither player dropped a game. Freshman Sheyenne Cleveland (Rural Retreat, Va.) and sophomore Casey Blackburn (Richmond, Va.) helped the Wasps to the decision, winning at number four and five singles, respectively.

Match Three – No. 8 Washington and Lee 5, Emory & Henry 0
No. 8 Washington and Lee dominated the doubles portion of the match and picked up victories in the first two singles flights, earning the 5-0 victory over Emory & Henry.

The Wasps are now 3-4 on the year with a 1-3 mark in ODAC play. They will return to the court on Tuesday in Hilton Head, S.C. with a match against John Carroll University.
