Emory & Henry Tennis Teams Post Victories Over Ferrum Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's and Women's Tennis Teams each picked up a non-conference win over Ferrum College Saturday morning at the E&H Tennis Courts. The men move to 10-3 with the 9-0 win over the Panthers while the women won, 6-3, to improve their record to 5-7 on the season.

Men – Emory & Henry 9, Ferrum 0
The Wasps got out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the competition with juniors Webster Gilley (Bristol, Tenn.) and Zach Eccher (Madison, Ala.) picking up an 8-2 win at number two doubles.

Junior Matt Nelson (Galax, Va.) won easily (6-0, 6-1) at the first singles flight while senior Chip Wintringham (Burlington, N.C.) got a (6-1, 6-0) win at number two singles.

Freshman John Hanlon (Bristol, Tenn.) and junior Daniel Ohlman (Ocala, Fla.) won their matches as pro-sets, with the contest being decided before they took the court.

Women – Emory & Henry 6, Ferrum 3
The Emory & Henry women snapped a two-match losing streak with a victory that started with a 3-0 lead coming from doubles play. The team of sophomore Alyssa Wingate (Independence, Va.) and freshman Sarah Vishnev (Mooresville, N.C.) got an 8-4 win at the number one flight while sophomore Emily Bolt (Independence, Va.) and freshman Sheyenne Cleveland (Rural Retreat, Va.)  won easily, 8-1.

Wingate picked up a (6-1, 6-1) win at first singles and Vishnev prevailed (6-2, 6-0) in the second singles flight to seal the match for the Wasps. Sophomore Casey Blackburn (Richmond, Va.) claimed the final win for E&H, winning 8-4 in a pro-set, as the match had already been decided.

Both the Emory & Henry men and women have Roanoke College as the next opponent on their respective schedules. The women are set to visit the Maroons on Monday while the men will travel to Salem on Wednesday for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest.
