Emory & Henry Women’s Tennis Defeats Sweet Briar, 6-3, Wednesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Tennis Team (10-9, 4-7 ODAC) completed the regular season on Wednesday afternoon with a 6-3 win over Sweet Briar College (5-12, 3-8 ODAC). The Wasps honored senior Alyssa Wingate (Independence, Va.) prior to the match.

Emory & Henry took a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match. The freshman tandem of Stella Di Michele (San Remo, ITALY) and Lauren Riner (Coeburn, Va.) won by an 8-3 score at the premier doubles pairing. Wingate and sophomore Meredith Yeary (Knoxville, Tenn.)  claimed an 8-2 victory at the second doubles flight.

Di Michele earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at the premier singles flight while Wingate got a 6-1, 2-1, ret. victory at No. 2 singles. Yeary won 7-5, 7-6 (3) at the third pairing while Riner came back from a one-set deficit to win, 0-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5.

With the win, Emory & Henry has qualified for the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The last time that the Wasps made the league's postseason was during the 2009 season. The pairings for the tournament will be released by the conference office Thursday evening after the conclusion of the day's matches.
