Emory & Henry Women's Tennis Gets First Victory, 5-4, Sunday Afternoon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Emory & Henry women's tennis team picks up its first victory of the season against the Spirits of Salem College. This is the second year in a row Head Coach, Jessica Giuggioli, has led the Wasps to victory over Salem, after defeating them 7-2 last season. The Wasps won the match by a score of 5-4. Giuggioli stated, "It was a great team effort today and a good start to the season."

E&H started off by winning both 1 and 2 doubles. Freshman Sveva Mazzari (San Remo, ITALY) and junior Chiara Mossi (Manduria, ITALY) won convincingly, 8-0. Sophomores Stella Di Michele (San Remo, ITALY) and Lauren Riner (Coeburn, Va.) continued their winning ways from last season by earning an 8-4 victory in number 2 doubles. The two were Second Team All-ODAC last season.

In singles play, E&H went 3-3 after giving up the 5 and 6 spot. Mazzari won 6-0. 6-0 in her first singles match for Emory & Henry College. Di Michele, who is ranked 24th in the ITA South Atlantic Region, won 6-0, 6-1. Number 27 ranked Mossi sealed the team's victory by winning number 3 singles 6-0, 6-0. Riner fought hard, but lost a heart breaker, 7-5, 2-6, 14-12 at the 4 spot for the Wasps.

The team's next match is on Friday at 2 p.m. vs. Bluefield on the campus of Emory & Henry College.
